For one reason or another, candidates feel that by stating on their resume that they were “Recruited away to increase sales …” or, “Recruited by my former manager to sell new technology…” makes them more appealing to a potential employer. While these phrases may sound good on the surface, it could also lead to some major problems in securing interviews.

If you answer to a recruiter’s posting, remember that your recruiter is your conduit to an interview. As mentioned before, most recruiters serve as the first step in the interview process, and failing to impress the recruiter means that it is highly unlikely that you will get your foot in the door. Now I have seen some great backgrounds on paper and will call those candidates with great anticipation- but nothing turns me off than a candidate who is lifeless, boring, and dull. Recruiters want to proudly represent candidates who exert energy, animation, and professionalism, and nothing kills that quicker than a candidate who does not speak up nor shows enthusiasm on the phone.

Even if you are not looking
In previous articles, I had mentioned that recruiters do not look kindly on candidates who are “not really looking, but just want to see what is out there.” As I mentioned, we are not the Sears Catalog of Job Openings. If you send us your resume, we will be more than happy to work with you in finding a new position if you are serious about making a change. But if you are just checking out the market I’m afraid that I cannot be of much help.
