Execution is Everything
I was a high school football coach on and off for over 20 years. A few years ago, our undefeated team had a tough opponent coming up- the undefeated arch rivals from the next town. First place in our Division was at stake. All week along the head coach kept barking the same tired battle cry, “Whoever wants this game the most will win it. You’ve got to want it more!’ All week long before, during, and after practice
Just before we took the field that Friday night he repeated the same tired line in the locker room and I had had enough. Finally I said, ‘Guys- it’s not a matter of wanting it more. The team that is going to win this game is the one that will EXECUTE.
We lost. We did not execute.
You can want a job more than any other candidate. But if you do not execute during that interview, you will lose to the competition.
During our week of practice, our head coach did not review game film, did not scout our opponent, did not research the tendencies of their offense, did not anticipate their defensive schemes-he virtually figured that since we were scoring 35 points a game and had been steamrolling our opponents, there was no need to research. So we went in blind. And we got clobbered.
When you prepare for an interview, you need to strategize. You need to review the company’s website. You need to download animation of the company’s product, you need to research the successes and weaknesses of the company, anticipate objections from the interviewer, hone your skills, have your plan of attack, have your strategy in place, get your game plan ready, scout the company and execute!
Do not go in blind. Wanting it more than your competition is not going to cut it. Executing your game plan will!
