Question #1 :
Where do you want to be in Five Years?
The common and most often used answer is: “I want to be in management, or, “I want to be sitting in your chair.”
The typical reaction to the first answer is… “Yawn.”
The typical reaction to the second answer is, “I don’t plan on going anywhere!”
Now wanting to be in management shows ambition, determination and drive. But EVERYONE uses that answer. So let’s try something like this…
“Cynthia, who knows where we will be five years from now. I would rather concentrate on my career progression one year at a time. I intend to be one of your top reps – if not your top rep – in my first year. And I intend to improve each and every year. When I have exceeded your expectations, and if you feel that I have EARNED the opportunity to move into a management role, i would be excited to speak with you about it at that time.”
You see, you are not EXPECTING a management role, but you have indicated that you are willing to EARN a management role. And it could happen in less than five years. It’s a different and refreshing approach.
I would love to hear your reaction/suggestions, and war stories… Please feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment below!
