Don’t Let Location Hinder Your Job Search

Not everyone lives in New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, LA, SF, etc.  While many companies post their job requirements as having to live in a major metropolitan area, companies will consider excellent candidates who live near a major airport not on the preferred list.  But these candidates have to be flexible to travel, or can reach major accounts in a reasonable amount of time.  Also, startup companies can be more flexible on location because these companies generally hire candidates to work a REGION as opposed to a major metropolitan area.  Now there are some startups who really want someone in a principal city to drive revenues in major local accounts, but I have seen (and have placed) candidates who are not in primary locations.  VPs of startup companies are mandated by their VC or private equity groups to drive revenues quickly and. as a result, many VPs look for instant revenue generators- even if the candidate is located in an outlying area.

It all comes down to how you position yourself on your resume.  If you can demonstrate that you are a revenue generator, that you have access to and experience in major targeted accounts, and you are willing to travel to generate those revenues, you definitely have a shot at an interview.  Just don’t give up if the posted location is not exactly where you live- startup companies are looking for people who can put that company on the map.
