How To Conduct Yourself During SKYPE and Facetime Interviews

SKYPE and Facetime interviews are interviews.  Period.  I am sure that you all know how to conduct yourselves during face to face interviews, right?  Proper business attire (meaning a suit), well groomed, bright, alert, articulate, energetic, good eye contact etc. The problem with Media interviews is the dynamic of it all. Spotty communication, unclear images, poor audio, etc.  These factors you cannot control.  But there are some things you can control, and these factors can and will determine the future course of the interview process. LOCATION AND JOB SEARCH

Don’t Let Location Hinder Your Job Search

Not everyone lives in New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, LA, SF, etc.  While many companies post their job requirements as having to live in a major metropolitan area, companies will consider excellent candidates who live near a major airport not on the preferred list.  But these candidates have to be flexible to travel, or can reach major accounts in a reasonable amount of time.  Also, startup companies can be more flexible on location because these companies generally hire candidates to work a REGION as opposed to a major metropolitan area.  Now there are some startups who really want someone in a principal city to drive revenues in major local accounts, but I have seen (and have placed) candidates who are not in primary locations.  VPs of startup companies are mandated by their VC or private equity groups to drive revenues quickly and. as a result, many VPs look for instant revenue generators- even if the candidate is located in an outlying area.

EXPLAINING GAPS ON YOUR RESUME

Let me first say that having employment gaps is not the end of the world, nor does it mean that you, as a candidate,  are damaged goods.  Most candidates, even Executive level candidates, have been laid off or terminated at one point or another.  Some have voluntarily left a position without somewhere else to go to, ( a practice I highly discourage unless it is a desperate situation) or a victim of circumstances out of their control.

Relocation- Are You Sure?

One of the most overused clichés in our business is the age old testament:

“I am willing to relocate for the RIGHT opportunity!”  What, as opposed to the WRONG opportunity?  I hear that time and again each and every day, each and every week.  And I ask candidates if they can identify what the RIGHT opportunity is and they answer, “I’ll know it when I hear it, ”  instead of telling me what the right opportunity is.  Now occasionally  I will call that candidate with the RIGHT opportunity but tell them that they will have to relocate.  All of a sudden it is not the right opportunity.

JOB HUNT

Utilizing All Resources In the Job Hunt

Let’s say that you are the offensive coordinator on a football team.  During the course of the game, you ask your QB to throw quick out patterns to the same receiver time and time again with little results.  And so at halftime, you decide to switch quarterbacks.  You want someone who is fresh, perhaps with a better arm and a better touch on the ball.  After all, SOMEONE has got to get this offense rolling, right?  So you put him in the game and you continue to have him throw the same out patterns to the same receiver with the same negative results.  You lose the game and cannot figure out why.  Could it possibly be that your game plan was lousy?  Could it be that if you spread the offense and diversified your play calling, you might have scored a touchdown or two?

The best sales representatives out there have many redeeming characteristics, but the most successful sales reps are experts at one thing- LISTENING.  There is a natural tendency to talk too much in trying to get a point across, but if there’s one thing that a customer or hiring manager cannot stand is a pushy sales rep who does not listen to what is being said.
