Let me first say that having employment gaps is not the end of the world, nor does it mean that you, as a candidate, are damaged goods. Most candidates, even Executive level candidates, have been laid off or terminated at one point or another. Some have voluntarily left a position without somewhere else to go to, ( a practice I highly discourage unless it is a desperate situation) or a victim of circumstances out of their control.

Relocation- Are You Sure?
One of the most overused clichés in our business is the age old testament:
“I am willing to relocate for the RIGHT opportunity!” What, as opposed to the WRONG opportunity? I hear that time and again each and every day, each and every week. And I ask candidates if they can identify what the RIGHT opportunity is and they answer, “I’ll know it when I hear it, ” instead of telling me what the right opportunity is. Now occasionally I will call that candidate with the RIGHT opportunity but tell them that they will have to relocate. All of a sudden it is not the right opportunity.

Utilizing All Resources In the Job Hunt
Let’s say that you are the offensive coordinator on a football team. During the course of the game, you ask your QB to throw quick out patterns to the same receiver time and time again with little results. And so at halftime, you decide to switch quarterbacks. You want someone who is fresh, perhaps with a better arm and a better touch on the ball. After all, SOMEONE has got to get this offense rolling, right?
