Believe it or not, interviewing while you are sick can absolutely work to your advantage. It can unwittingly provide a defense mechanism in the event that you do not have a strong interview! Now I am not advocating that you leave your deathbed to attend an interview, nor am I suggesting that you spread a very contagious disease in doing so. I am merely saying that if you can muster the strength to interview while you are not at your best, it can actually help you in the process. Here’s why…
Suppose you have a strong interview. The hiring manager can come to the conclusion that ” Gee, this gal had a great interview while she was not feeling well. Imagine how great her interview would be if she were 100%! And if she can perform this great while not at her best physically, imagine what she would be like in the field if she WERE at her best!”
Now if the interview did not go well, the manager can conclude that the reason was that she was not 100%, and maybe she needs a second chance. Regardless, she has demonstrated how interested she is in the position by showing up under adverse circumstances. It is almost a win- win scenario!
Again I am not encouraging people to put themselves or the hiring manager at risk. Stay in bed and get well- the interview will wait for you. But if you can muster the strength to interview when conditions are not exactly right, it can have a positive effect on the process.
Take care of yourselves!
